Anemia ICD-10-CM Codes
ICD-10-CM codes for anemia, including iron deficiency anemia, hemolytic anemia, aplastic anemia, and anemia in chronic disease.
Coding Guidance for Anemia
Chapter 3 organizes anemia by cause: nutritional deficiency (D50-D53), hereditary hemolytic anemias such as sickle cell disease (D55-D58), acquired hemolytic anemia (D59), aplastic anemia (D60-D61), acute blood loss (D62), and anemia in chronic diseases classified elsewhere (D63). D64.9 (anemia, unspecified) is used only when no cause is determined.
Anemia associated with another condition requires both codes: D63.0 with the underlying neoplasm and D63.1 with CKD, sequenced per guideline conventions for the underlying condition first.
Do not report anemia as an additional code when it is an expected, integral component of the documented condition; the index and tabular instructional notes identify these situations.
