Understanding MS-DRG Concepts

What is MS-DRG?

Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group (MS-DRG) is a classification system used by Medicare and other insurers to group hospital cases with similar clinical characteristics and resource needs.

Major Diagnostic Category (MDC)

MDCs are broad clinical categories (usually organized by organ system) that act as the first level of classification. Each MDC is subdivided into specific medical or surgical DRGs.

Medical vs. Surgical

DRGs are partitioned into Medical (based on diagnosis) and Surgical (based on significant OR procedures). Surgical DRGs typically involve higher resource consumption.
