How to code Thyroid Nodule

E04.1 is nontoxic single thyroid nodule, which also covers a cold nodule and a colloid nodule. Two or more nodules (multinodular goiter) are E04.2, a diffuse goiter without nodules is E04.0, and E04.9 is nontoxic goiter, unspecified.

A nodule causing hyperthyroidism is coded as thyrotoxicosis: E05.10 for a toxic single nodule and E05.20 for a toxic multinodular goiter, without thyroid storm. Iodine-deficiency multinodular goiter is E01.1.

After biopsy, code the result: C73 for thyroid cancer, or D44.0 when pathology reports a neoplasm of uncertain behavior. A neck lump that has not yet been identified as thyroid is R22.1.
