How to code Leukopenia
D72.819 is decreased white blood cell count, unspecified, and is the code the index gives for leukopenia NOS and low WBC. Lymphocytopenia (lymphopenia) is D72.810, and other specified decreases, such as basophilic or eosinophilic leukopenia, are D72.818.
When the low count is specifically neutrophils, code neutropenia from D70 instead: D70.9 unspecified, D70.1 after cancer chemotherapy, and D70.2 for other drug-induced neutropenia. The index sends chemotherapy-induced leukopenia to D70.1 and drug-induced leukopenia to D70.2.
When red cells and platelets are also low, the finding is pancytopenia (D61.818 or another D61.81- code), not leukopenia. Transient neutropenia in a newborn is P61.5.
