How to code Hypertriglyceridemia
E78.1 is pure hyperglyceridemia and is the code for hypertriglyceridemia, elevated triglycerides, and elevated fasting triglycerides. When high triglycerides occur with high cholesterol, the index directs you to E78.2 (mixed hyperlipidemia) instead, and E78.1 is not added.
Hyperchylomicronemia, including familial chylomicronemia syndrome, is E78.3. E78.5 (hyperlipidemia, unspecified) is used only when the lipid abnormality is not described. For the full lipid category, see the hyperlipidemia guide.
The index has no entry for pancreatitis due to hypertriglyceridemia, so it falls under acute pancreatitis, specified NEC: K85.80, or K85.81 and K85.82 with necrosis. Add E78.1 for the hypertriglyceridemia. A lipid panel ordered as screening with no abnormal finding is Z13.220.
