How to code Tendinitis and Bursitis

Tendon and bursa conditions are spread over several categories by site rather than gathered in one place. M70 covers overuse and pressure disorders with laterality at the 6th character: M70.2- olecranon bursitis, M70.4- prepatellar bursitis, M70.5- other knee bursitis, M70.6- trochanteric bursitis (M70.61 right hip, M70.62 left hip), and M70.7- other hip bursitis. M76 is enthesopathy of the lower limb excluding the foot: M76.0- gluteal tendinitis, M76.3- iliotibial band syndrome, M76.5- patellar tendinitis, M76.6- Achilles tendinitis. M77 holds the elbow and foot codes: M77.0- medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow), M77.1- lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), M77.3- calcaneal spur, M77.4- metatarsalgia, M77.5- other foot and ankle enthesopathy.

Shoulder tendinitis and bursitis are in M75 (M75.2- bicipital tendinitis, M75.3- calcific tendinitis, M75.5- bursitis of shoulder), not in M70 or M77. Tenosynovitis is category M65: de Quervain tenosynovitis is M65.4 with no laterality, trigger finger is M65.3- with a 5th character for the digit and a 6th for side, and other synovitis or tenosynovitis by region is M65.8-. A Baker cyst is M71.2- and unspecified bursopathy is M71.9.

Nearly every code in this group has laterality, so an unspecified-side code (6th character 0 or 9) is a documentation gap rather than a valid default. Category M70 also carries a note to add a Y93 activity code when the overuse activity is documented. Traumatic tendon ruptures are chapter 19 injury codes, and calcific tendinitis of sites other than the shoulder is M65.2-.
