How to code Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea in adults and children is G47.33. Sleep apnea with no documented type is G47.30. Central sleep apnea is G47.31 (primary) or G47.37 (in conditions classified elsewhere, with the underlying condition such as heart failure coded first). G47.39 is other sleep apnea and G47.32 is high altitude periodic breathing.

Sleep-related hypoventilation is coded separately from apnea: G47.34 idiopathic, G47.35 congenital central, and G47.36 in conditions classified elsewhere. Obesity hypoventilation syndrome has its own code, E66.2 (morbid obesity with alveolar hypoventilation), and is reported in addition to G47.33 when both are documented.

Snoring (R06.83) is a symptom and should not be reported once OSA is confirmed. Obesity is coded as an additional diagnosis when documented (E66.01, E66.813, or another E66 code) with the BMI Z68 code. CPAP or BiPAP dependence for OSA is reported with Z99.89 (dependence on other enabling machines and devices). A sleep study ordered to evaluate suspected OSA with no confirmed diagnosis is coded to the presenting symptoms, not G47.33.
