How to code Pyelonephritis

N10 is acute pyelonephritis (acute kidney infection). Chronic pyelonephritis is coded from N11, with N11.0 for nonobstructive reflux-associated and N11.1 for obstructive. N12 is used when the record does not say acute or chronic. Add an organism code when known, such as B96.20 for E. coli.

Pyelonephritis with hydronephrosis (pyonephrosis) is N13.6, and calculous pyelonephritis is N20.9. In pregnancy, kidney infection is coded from O23.0-. A lower urinary tract infection without kidney involvement is N39.0.
