How to code Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

PID without a stated site or organism is N73.9 (female pelvic inflammatory disease, unspecified). When the documentation names the structure involved, use the specific category: N70 for salpingitis and oophoritis (N70.01 acute salpingitis, N70.03 acute salpingitis and oophoritis, N70.1- chronic, N70.9- unspecified), N71 for inflammatory disease of the uterus including endometritis (N71.0 acute, N71.1 chronic, N71.9 unspecified), and N73 for parametritis, pelvic cellulitis, pelvic peritonitis and pelvic adhesions (N73.6 for postinfective pelvic peritoneal adhesions).

Organism changes the chapter. Gonococcal PID is A54.24 and chlamydial PID is A56.11; these chapter 1 codes are used instead of N70 to N73, not with them. For other cultured organisms the N-code is primary and a B95 to B97 code is added, for example B96.89 for other bacterial agents. N74 (female pelvic inflammatory disorders in diseases classified elsewhere) is for PID due to a disease such as tuberculosis and requires the underlying disease to be coded first.

Tubo-ovarian abscess is coded to N70.- as salpingitis and oophoritis, with the acute form preferred when documented. Infertility resulting from prior PID is N97.1 (tubal origin). PID in pregnancy is coded with the chapter 15 O23.5- code first, followed by the N-code.
