How to code Panic Disorder
F41.0 (panic disorder, episodic paroxysmal anxiety) is the code for recurrent, unexpected panic attacks. It has no further subdivision. Panic attack as an isolated symptom without a panic disorder diagnosis also maps to F41.0 through the index entry for panic attack.
When agoraphobia is present, use category F40.0 instead of F41.0: F40.01 (agoraphobia with panic disorder) or F40.02 (agoraphobia without panic disorder). F40.00 is agoraphobia, unspecified. Do not report F41.0 together with F40.01, since the combination code already captures the panic disorder.
A single episode of acute stress with panic symptoms following a traumatic event is a stress reaction (F43.0 acute stress reaction), not panic disorder. R45.7 (state of emotional shock and stress) is a symptom code reserved for encounters with no established mental disorder.
