How to code Neurogenic Bladder

N31.9 is neuromuscular dysfunction of bladder, unspecified, the default for neurogenic bladder with no type stated. N31.0 is uninhibited neuropathic bladder, N31.1 is reflex neuropathic bladder (often from spinal cord injury above the sacral level), N31.2 is flaccid neuropathic bladder (atonic or autonomous), and N31.8 is other neuromuscular dysfunction.

N31 carries a use additional code note for any associated urinary incontinence, such as R32 or urge incontinence N39.41, and urinary retention can be added with R33.8 or R33.9. Code the neurological cause as well when known, for example multiple sclerosis G35.D, spina bifida Q05.9, cauda equina syndrome G83.4, or diabetic neuropathy E11.40.

N31 excludes cauda equina syndrome with neurogenic bladder (G83.4) and neuromuscular dysfunction due to spinal cord lesion (G95.89), so check the Excludes1 notes before pairing those codes. Recurrent UTIs in a patient who self-catheterizes can be captured with Z87.440 for history.
