How to code Necrotizing Fasciitis

M72.6 is necrotizing fasciitis at any site. Add an organism code when it is known, such as B95.0 for group A strep or B95.61 for MSSA. Fournier gangrene in males is N49.3, and gas gangrene (clostridial myonecrosis) is A48.0.

If the patient has sepsis, the sepsis code, such as A41.9, is sequenced first when sepsis is present on admission, followed by M72.6. Add R65.2- when there is acute organ dysfunction.
