How to code Erectile Dysfunction

Organic (physical) erectile dysfunction is category N52. N52.9 (male erectile dysfunction, unspecified) is the code for ED without a documented cause and is the default in most primary care and urology encounters. When the cause is stated, use the specific 4th and 5th character: N52.01 arterial insufficiency, N52.02 corporo-venous occlusive dysfunction, N52.03 combined vasculogenic ED, N52.2 drug-induced ED (add a T36-T50 adverse effect code for the drug), and N52.8 other male erectile dysfunction.

N52.1 (erectile dysfunction due to diseases classified elsewhere) has a code-first note: sequence the underlying condition first, for example a diabetes complication code such as E11.69 for type 2 diabetes with ED, then N52.1. Postprocedural ED is subcategory N52.3- with the procedure identified at the 5th character: N52.31 after radical prostatectomy, N52.32 after radical cystectomy, N52.34 after simple prostatectomy, N52.35 after radiation therapy, N52.37 after prostate ablative therapy, N52.39 other or unspecified.

Psychogenic ED is a mental health diagnosis, F52.21 (male erectile disorder), and is reported instead of N52.- when the provider documents a psychological cause. Testosterone deficiency is E29.1 (testicular hypofunction), a separate diagnosis that is added when documented rather than coded as ED. Sexual dysfunction unspecified without an erectile diagnosis is R37.
