How to code Conjunctivitis

Acute conjunctivitis with no documented type is H10.3- with laterality in the fifth character: H10.31 right eye, H10.32 left eye, H10.33 bilateral, H10.30 unspecified eye. Conjunctivitis documented without acute or chronic is H10.9 (unspecified conjunctivitis), which has no laterality. The term pink eye indexes to acute mucopurulent conjunctivitis, H10.02- (H10.023 bilateral), not to H10.9. Most other H10 subcategories use a sixth character for laterality: 1 right, 2 left, 3 bilateral, 9 unspecified.

Bacterial conjunctivitis is mucopurulent, H10.02- (other mucopurulent) or H10.01- (acute follicular). Allergic conjunctivitis is acute atopic H10.1- (H10.13 bilateral), vernal H10.44, or other chronic allergic H10.45; the last two have no laterality. Chronic conjunctivitis is H10.4-, with H10.40- unspecified chronic and H10.42- simple chronic.

Viral conjunctivitis is coded in the infectious disease chapter, not H10: B30.9 viral conjunctivitis unspecified, B30.1 adenoviral conjunctivitis, B30.0 adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis, and B30.3 acute epidemic hemorrhagic conjunctivitis. Blepharoconjunctivitis (inflammation of both lid and conjunctiva) is H10.5-, and blepharitis alone is H01.0-.
