How to code Cardiac Arrest
I46.2 is cardiac arrest due to an underlying cardiac condition, I46.8 is due to another underlying condition, and I46.9 is cause unspecified. I46.2 and I46.8 carry a code first note, so the underlying condition, such as ventricular fibrillation I49.01 or an acute MI, is sequenced before the arrest code.
Arrest during or after a procedure is coded to I97.71- (intraoperative) or I97.12- (postprocedural), split by cardiac and other surgery. Cardiac arrest of a newborn is P29.81. A patient who survived a sudden cardiac arrest is coded with Z86.74 at later visits. Cardiogenic shock is R57.0 and is not included in I46.
