How to code Allergic Rhinitis

J30.9 is allergic rhinitis unspecified. The cause-specific codes are J30.1 allergic rhinitis due to pollen (hay fever), J30.2 other seasonal allergic rhinitis, J30.5 allergic rhinitis due to food, J30.81 due to animal hair and dander, and J30.89 other allergic rhinitis, which covers perennial rhinitis from dust mites or mold. J30.0 is vasomotor rhinitis, a nonallergic condition.

Rhinitis NOS and chronic rhinitis are J31.0, which J30 excludes. Allergic rhinitis with asthma has an Excludes1 note pointing to J45.909; in practice, when both are documented, assign the asthma code from J45 and the rhinitis code, since the two conditions are separately treated.

Allergic conjunctivitis is coded separately from the eye chapter: H10.10 for acute atopic conjunctivitis or H10.45 for chronic allergic conjunctivitis. Allergy status Z-codes are not needed for allergic rhinitis, and skin testing results do not change the code unless the provider documents the specific trigger.
