How to code Weakness

R53.1 is weakness, used for generalized weakness or asthenia that the provider describes as a general symptom. M62.81 is muscle weakness (generalized), used when the provider documents weakness of the muscles, as is common in physical therapy and rehab settings. The two describe different findings, so choose the one that matches the wording in the record.

Related codes include R53.81 (other malaise, including debility not otherwise specified), R53.83 (other fatigue), R54 (age-related physical debility, frailty), and R53.2 (functional quadriplegia). Facial weakness is R29.810, and muscle wasting or atrophy is M62.50.

Weakness of one side of the body is hemiparesis, not R53.1 or M62.81. Use G81.9- for hemiplegia or hemiparesis, or I69.- when it is a late effect of a stroke. Like other symptom codes, R53.1 is not reported when the weakness is explained by a confirmed diagnosis. See the fatigue guide for R53.8- detail.
