How to code Urinary Retention
R33.9 is retention of urine, unspecified. R33.8 is other retention of urine, and R33.0 is drug-induced retention. With R33.0, add the adverse effect code for the drug, for example T44.3X5A for an anticholinergic.
R33 has a code first note for hyperplasia of prostate (N40.1) when that is the cause, so urinary retention due to BPH is reported as N40.1 followed by R33.8 or R33.9. Retention from a neurogenic bladder is coded to N31.- (N31.9 when unspecified). Related symptoms such as feeling of incomplete emptying R39.14 and hesitancy R39.11 can be added when documented.
Postoperative urinary retention is coded only when the provider documents it as a complication, using N99.89 with R33.8 or R33.9. Otherwise, code the retention with R33.- alone.
