How to code Urinary Frequency
R35.0 is frequency of micturition (frequent urination). Nocturia is R35.1. Polyuria (passing large volumes of urine) is coded from R35.8-: R35.81 nocturnal polyuria and R35.89 other polyuria. Urgency of urination is R39.15, and frequency and urgency can be coded together when both are documented.
These symptom codes are not reported when the cause is diagnosed. Overactive bladder is N32.81, a urinary tract infection is N39.0, and BPH with lower urinary tract symptoms is N40.1 with the symptom codes added as instructed at N40.1. Polyuria from diabetes insipidus is E23.2. See the urinary incontinence and overactive bladder guide for leakage codes.
