How to code Hip Pain

Hip pain is M25.55-: M25.551 pain in right hip, M25.552 pain in left hip, and M25.559 pain in unspecified hip. Bilateral hip pain is reported with both M25.551 and M25.552. Add G89.29 when the provider documents chronic hip pain.

Lateral hip pain diagnosed as trochanteric bursitis is M70.61 (right) or M70.62 (left), and M25.55- is not added. Hip osteoarthritis is M16.11 or M16.12 for one side and M16.0 for both. Hip stiffness with no stated cause is M25.651 or M25.652.

Pain in the thigh rather than the hip joint is M79.65-, such as M79.651, and coccyx or tailbone pain is M53.3. A hip fracture is never coded as hip pain; see the hip fracture guide for S72 codes.
