How to code Foot Pain

Foot pain is M79.67-: M79.671 pain in right foot, M79.672 pain in left foot, and M79.673 pain in unspecified foot. Toe pain uses M79.674 (right), M79.675 (left), and M79.676 (unspecified). Heel pain has no separate code and is reported with the M79.67- code for the side.

Pain in the ankle or in the joints of the foot is coded to M25.57- instead, such as M25.571 for the right side. Use M79.67- for pain in the soft tissue or bones of the foot and M25.57- when the provider points to a joint.

Drop the pain code when a cause is diagnosed. Plantar fasciitis is coded from M72.2-, M72.21 right foot and M72.22 left foot; a calcaneal (heel) spur is M77.31 or M77.32; metatarsalgia (ball of foot pain) is M77.41 or M77.42; and osteoarthritis of the foot is M19.071 or M19.072. See the plantar fasciitis guide for more detail.
